One might think there'd be a red flash on the screen (instead of simply being bumped away from the enemy) and an "oomph" sound effect. (cf. Subnautica's way of doing it)

There is a slight bit of noise around the edge of the screen when taking damage but agree it's a little too subtle

I think it should scale in severity with the amount of damage taken.

I didn't realize there was fall damage for at least an hour, because there was just not enough of an indication that I took damage. When I noticed I was missing some health later, I just assumed it was one of those scaly dogs

I agree to the visual part. For the audio, I heard some beeps when getting damaged. That may not be the best solution, but I guess it IS there, at least.

August 28th update: We've removed downvotes!
